While good communication skills are essential to success in today’s world, an argument can easily be made that their importance is more critical today than ever before. Those who possess the ability to communicate skillfully and effectively are greatly needed in a world that is dynamic and changing, challenging and unpredictable, and often confusing and dangerous.

Communication is the process whereby information is exchanged between individuals and groups. Communications skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening, enable people to communicate effectively with one another. These are essential skills in our personal and professional lives, and they are perishable. The skills must be consistently developed and honed.

Why, then, the elevated importance of, and the need for, those skills in our society of today?

When international calls are dialed, only few realize that how difficult it was to do so just thirty or forty years ago. In those days use of telephone for international calls was not common. People had to depend on letters and manually carried mail for official or personal matters. Initially when people started using telephone for international calls, they had to take operator’s assistance. Then came subscriber trunk dialing (STD), which allowed customers to make international calls without operator’s help. The term STD is commonly used in UK, Republic of Ireland, Australia, India and Pakistan. Direct distance dialing is the alternative term used in USA and Canada. A trunk-call may be defined as a call made through a trunk which connects two far away exchanges. The term has become obsolete as all calls now can be made direct.

There are cellular phones that are handy and can be used in most places in the world. Satellite phones are a choice that has become much more readily available and cheaper in recent years. Of course there is always the choice of a terrestrial land line that has been in use since the beginning of phone service. A land line though, is limited in many ways.

The new choices that people on the go will have to choose from are pretty simple; the satellite phone or cell phone. Cell phones no matter how popular they are are still limited by cell tower signals and there are dead zones, but they are great if the signal is strong. If, however, you venture into the areas where cell phones are no match for satellite phones you will easily see the necessity of a sat phone over a cell phone. Off the beaten path places do bring a certain stigma to cell phones.

Today, most enterprises that wish to develop and grow are constantly looking for ways of improving their communication infrastructure. One of the popular ways of improving communication in a firm is by use Session Initiation Protocol (SIP trunking). This is using voice internet protocol (VoIP) to enable connection of private branch exchange to internet. This trunk enables the firm to communicate over internet protocol both outside and within the firm. The trunk is offered by an internet telephony service provider.

To deploy this service successfully, three main components are necessary. The first component is an internet protocol (IP) based private branch exchange (PBX) which communicates with all the endpoints via the IP. An analog or traditional digital PBX may also serve the purpose so long at the session initiation protocol interface connectivity is available.

A high number of businesses are transitioning from the old school based idea of telecommunication systems to hosted PBX systems. This transition typically takes place for many reasons; however, primary cause for most businesses to switch is the cost effectiveness. There are other advantages as well, such as the calling features and other advanced features that go along with hosted PBX systems.

A traditional phone system for telecommunications has proven itself a nightmare for many businesses. The equipment needed for such an endeavor is very expensive, and the maintenance and upgrades are enough to require on site experts that are solely dedicated to the process. This added expense of personnel is enough of a reason for many business owners to make the switch in itself.
